Fans of Max Payne; we have news for you.
With excitement already bubbling up nicely for the return of our favourite painkiller-addicted vigilante, Rockstar have just upped the ante with the news that there will be plenty of Max Payne 3 DLC to look forward to in the future. The publisher announced yesterday that there will be seven, yes seven, map packs dropping over the next six months following the game’s release on the 15th of May (in the U.S; 18th for everybody else). Not much information has been revealed but it is definitely a statement of intent from Rockstar. So what should we expect?
Well, the map packs will be released from June onwards, offering some variety to the multiplayer experience. In addition to the maps, the DLC promises multiplayer challenges, avatar items and if the rumors are valid, possibly a few new game modes. With Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Gang Wars and Payne Killer already on the disc, any additional game modes will help freshen up the multiplayer. It’ll be interesting to see what else can suit the time altering style that Max Payne 3 offers.
Furthermore, the DLC can be bought either individually or in the Rockstar pass, which gives you access to all the packs with a one off payment. The pass is available from the game’s day of release so if you were to purchase it, every pack can be downloaded on their respective release dates for no extra charge. Fans of L.A Noire or Gears of War 3 will recognise the season pass system and how beneficial it can be, especially if you want to save a little bit of cash. That remains the case here, as the pass will cost you a mere 2400 Microsoft Points in comparison to the 3240 that you’ll need to pay if you decide to buy all the packs seperately. With a total discount of 35%, the pass is definitely worth considering if you plan to continue playing Max Payne 3′s multiplayer on a long term basis.
Here is the schedule for the Rockstar Pass.
June 2012:
Local Justice Map Pack
Summer 2012:
Disorganised Crime Map Pack
Deathmatch Made In Heaven Mode Pack
Hostage Negotiation Map Pack
New York Minute Co-Op Pack
Autumn 2012:
Painful Memories Map Pack
Trickle Down Economics Map Pack
At the moment, the ones drawing the most attention are the Made in Heaven and New York Minute packs, as they both suggest we could be looking at something a bit different from a standard map pack. No more information has been given since so it’s all speculation at the moment.
It’ll be interesting to see how successful Max Payne 3′s multiplayer will be. Rockstar have already shown with this pass how committed they are to the multiplayer component and so far the signs suggest that their efforts be rewarded with this summer’s suprise hit. Only time will tell, however, whether Max Payne 3 can compete with the big boys. This pass could be ultimately be very important in keeping the multiplayer experience fresh to ensure the game retains it’s online population when games like Black Ops 2 are released.
We’ll keep an eye out for any more news in the next few weeks. What are your thoughts? Are you interested in purchasing the pass straight away or do you think you’ll wait and see before shelling out any more money? Let us know.
And until then, here is the official trailer to get you in the mood.
